Chapter Sixteen – Meredith

“I don’t think there is any amount of caffeine that could wake me up this morning.” Meredith didn’t regret her decision to go out on her late date with Silas, but she sure wished he’d arrived on time.

“You’ll be fine,” Keely told her as they headed out to the car. “You can always take a power nap when Aunt Laura arrives with her friends.”

“It’s good of them to pitch in and help.” Meredith unlocked the car and got behind the wheel. The faint scent of leather reminded her of last night.

“They knew Mom. I often forget that.” Keely buckled her seatbelt and glanced at Meredith. “So Silas’s excuse was that he overslept?”

“Yes.” Meredith drove the car to the store, she wasn’t in the mood to question whether Silas had been truthful in his excuse.

“And Coulson was asleep, too?”

“Coulson fell asleep and when he woke up, he figured Silas had already gotten up and gone out.” It sounded plausible to Meredith, but Keely was having a hard time with it.

“Doesn’t Silas automatically wake up when the sun sets? That seems to be how Maughna operates.”

“Maybe it’s different for Silas now that he has the daylight ring. It might interfere with his internal alarm clock.” Meredith parked the car in front of the store and got out, her eyes were gritty as the sun peeked out from behind a fluffy white cloud.

“Maybe.” Keely slammed the car door shut. “Okay. Let’s get candle-making!”

“You sound far too perky this morning,” Meredith complained.

“Believe me, I am channeling my inner perkiness to get me through the day.” She unlocked the store and went inside. “I’m also reminding myself that we’re doing this for Mom.”

“You’re right. For Mom.” Meredith shook off her tiredness as she went inside and put on a fresh pot of coffee before helping Keely check the candles she and Laura had made the day before.

Even unlit, the candles had filled the room with the lingering aroma of the Nusterium, which overpowered all the usual scents of incense the candle shop wore.

With a grunt of satisfaction, Keely grabbed a cardboard box and handed it to Meredith. “Let’s put the lids on these and then pack them up for when Neave arrives. We can put the boxes in her truck ready for transporting to Silas’s. It’ll free up room in here.”

“You’re very organized.” Meredith began packing the finished candles in the box.

“Am I?” Keely stopped working for a moment. “I suppose I am.”

“You never were at school. You were always late with your homework or for class. Dad used to despair.” Meredith tucked the flaps over each other and carried the first full box out into the main part of the store.

“It’s different when there’s no one telling you what to do. I suppose I’ve grown up and matured.” She chuckled. “Which is only natural since our school days were like another lifetime ago.”

“Right, all of the finished candles are packed. I’ll make coffee and then we can get started on the next batch.
